CUSTOM OUTSOLE

CUSTOM OUTSOLE DEVELOPMENT

The outsole of a shoe is an integral part of its overall design, and in particular, a shoe’s performance. While the inners of sneakers are relatively similar, outsoles differ greatly because of very different performance requirements - whether you're running, biking, climbing, walking or simply wandering around the office. As a result, shoe soles are complicated to design and manufacture, requiring unique production methods to organically shape and develop each design. However, recent developments in manufacturing systems have extended the possibilities of shoe outsole design, opening up a whole new world centred around custom outsole development.

CUSTOM OUTSOLE PRODUCTION IN PORTUGAL

PORTUGAL AS A DESTINATION FOR CUSTOM SHOE SOLE DESIGNS
As we’ve already mentioned - shoe soles are extremely complex in their design and manufacturing process. On top of this, the shoe outsole is also one of the most costly components of the shoe, accounting for up to 10% of the total shoe. In addition, outsole tooling is one of the most expensive pieces of shoe-making equipment needed. Considering the price and complexities surrounding shoe outsole production, Portugal has emerged as one of the leading markets in footwear manufacturing because of the country's ability to produce footwear at a relatively low cost and at high quality. Built on ingrained talent and craftsmanship, Portugal has a long history in the footwear industry, which it has used to develop a reputation for luxury and quality. Technological innovations, creative marketing approaches and investments made by the current generation of Portuguese entrepreneurs have all contributed to Portugal’s positioning as one of the world’s leaders when it comes to footwear, and of course, custom shoe sole production and design.

A FOCUS ON SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability has become an integral focus throughout the process of shoe production and design - and, rightly so. Recent innovations in processes and materials used are to thank for this. Today, every aspect of the shoe can be manufactured sustainably, creating styles that feel better and help the planet by producing less waste and a smaller ecological footprint. When it comes to the outsole of a shoe, multiple materials can be used. Lightweight EVA, recycled TR, Soles made from sugarcane is one example of a sustainable material that recently is developed. 100% recycled rubber is a perfect option for the bottom sole as it provides solid grip and durability. Vegan sole options incorporate materials that are toxic-free and animal-friendly such as rice grains, recycled rubber and cork.

CUSTOM OUTSOLES VS EXISTING DESIGNS
If you’re starting a footwear collection, then you want to make sure you are choosing the right type of outsole. From Polyurethane Wedge Soles to leather and Vibram soles, there is an extensive array of existing types of soles available on the market today. While these existing, ‘template’ designs are a great option for your collection, custom outsoles enable you to create a totally new and unique design to truly elevate the look and feel of your shoes. If your footwear styles are meant for a particular purpose or activity, custom outsoles also make it possible to create the very best fit that is tailored towards those needs - handmade to perfection.

HOW TO START A CUSTOM OUTSOLE
Beginning your custom outsole starts with the conceptual design of your shoe. Depending upon what the shoe will be used for, a sole design will be tailored to match its performance. Once your desired sole design has been determined, the sourcing of your chosen materials can begin. Like the uppers of your shoes, soles come in various shapes, sizes and materials enabling you to tailor the shoe towards your footwear style. Once materials have been sourced, the custom sole and last will be created.

THE PROCESS OF MAKING CUSTOM SOLES

OUR STEP-BY-STEP CUSTOM OUTSOLE PROCESS:

Technical Specifications - Your custom outsole starts by transferring your ideas into reality through the form of a design concept. This includes the technical specs of your shoe and the sole, which provides an initial guide towards the final design.

3D Design - After receiving the technical specs of your sole, a 3D digital design is developed. This digital illustration is then shared with you in order to confirm proportions, aesthetics and the overall shoe design. Depending upon the number of feedback rounds, this step can take around 1.5 weeks.

Maquette - Once the 3D shoe design has been approved, we can build a physical maquette sample of the sole that will need to fit into the prototype of the upper in order to see the overall results. A maquette is a scale model of an unfinished shoe. At this stage, the shoe's last shape and the first upper prototype are completed, taking approximately 1 week to complete.

Mould making -  After the maquette is approved, the process continues by making a shoe mould. From this mould, we’re able to produce the final soles in preparation for production and the completion of the first shoe sample. Depending upon the complexity of the mould, this stage can take up to three weeks to complete.
